the spider

the spider
climbs the polished metal wall
in a desperate attempt
to get to where i don’t know
step by step it climbs
gripping and slipping
occasionally stopping
whether to rest
or rethink it’s destination
i can’t be sure
just as i begin to believe
it may make it to the top
the wind blows
sending it sailing
to the ground
it approaches the wall once more
but thinks better of it
and returns to its web
in the corner on the ground
“i feel your pain”, i think
sure that i am not the only one
who understands
